Salam sejahtera,

Kepala Satuan Kerja Hukum dan Kepatuhan
PT. Bank Central Asia, Tbk.

It is my greatest pleasure and honor to offer a testimonial to Evand Halim. He is one of a few highly conscientious teachers I know who is profoundly in love with the subject he teaches: legal translation.
When for the first time I had the opportunity to see him teaching this subject at a round table discussion at RELO Jakarta, his legal translation course in Atmajaya had already been well developed. Back then, LBI UI was considering to open similar courses at our premises and I was very much impressed by his genuine generousity to provide insights and share experience of the potentials and challenges of conducting such courses. He even went further to help conduct several LBI internal capacity development workshops as well as teach some sessions of our courses.
As an instructor, Evand possesses an immense breath and depth of knowledge with regards to both legal language and translation theories and practice. At the same time, he possesses a passion to always seek for excellence when trying to find equivalents and pass the experience on to his students. It is therefore understandable why most participants at his sessions often become mesmerized by his “knowledge-sharing teaching method” and some cannot decide to go deeper into this “rather heavy subject.”
The Translation and Interpreting Program of LBI UI, of which I have been in charge since 2008, owes Evand for his highly valuable contribution to our Translators Qualification Exam (UKP) which underwent a radical change in its evaluation system last year. He had put in a considerable amount of time into challenging my and other team members’ ideas in a series of dynamic and lively discussions before we could finally make decisions. This speaks volumes about his professionalism as a team player and character as a person.
Evand Halim is indeed a superb teacher, excellent co-worker, and most of all, a generous and highly trustworthy friend.

Evand Halim is a great and professional teacher and his teaching technique is different in the sense that he teaches with his heart
and is willing to explain in details why we should pick out this word and not that word and how to apply it in the right context.
If there had been no time limit in the class – he would have continued to give us (his students) more tips & hints that I’m sure you would never experience in any other class. What I like about Evand is that he never underestimates his students. His class is always full of joy, laughter, but also seriousness and hard work!
Joining his class will give you more self-confidence in your English, especially in writing.

I took the legal translation class for beginners at PPB Atma Jaya in August 2006 when I was just a few months working as a translator. The class was really enjoyable and beneficial for us. We learned a lot about legal terms and we were given a lot of practice to familiarize ourselves with the legal translation. Some students that attended the class were lawyers, notaries, teachers, etc. The material given in the class was so relevant and practical, and it helped to prepare us in facing the translator’s qualification exam or at least to give invaluable knowledge about legal English to those who would like to know what the legal translation is like.
I also attended the advanced legal translation class (ALTC), which gave me more confidence in translating legal texts. Soon after that I tried my luck in the qualification exam. The fi rst time I sat the exam I only managed to get grade B (2007) but at the second attempt (2008) I managed to get an A and thereby making me eligible to become a Sworn Translator. I know that without attending the Legal Translation course at PPB Atma Jaya I would not have been able to pass the test.
The teacher, Mr. Evand Halim, is a great teacher: he is a highly knowledgeable teacher. I think he is a master of linguistics and has a wide and in-depth knowledge about the legal aspects of the translation. He is very effective in sharing and transferring his knowledge and you certainly can learn a lot by attending his course. His course is indeed a great way to obtain or broaden our knowledge in legal translation. At the same time, his experience, knowledge and personality have enabled him to create a dynamic and fun class and I truly enjoyed it.
Atma Jaya campus is also conveniently located. It is located in the very heart of the city, so it is within easy reach. The classroom is air-conditioned and the Legal Translation Course is scheduled after business hours, which enables office workers to also attend the class after work.
All in all, I must say that the LTC at PPB Atma Jaya is undoubtedly a beneficial and fun way to learn legal translation!! I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn about legal translation from the real expert and I promise you won’t regret it.

When I joined the Basic Legal Translation Course (22 January – 7 April 2009), frankly speaking I felt hesitant because I did not have any educational background in law. I discovered later that the 8 people who attended the course had various educational backgrounds. Pak Evand is a very good teacher who can explain the lesson in details. He created good atmosphere in class, friendly interaction and useful classroom discussions. He guided us with great patience and positive encouragement. The lessons were a good mixture of theory and practice. We were always given homework to practice our translation skill. The whole course was really useful and helpful.
Subsequently I joined the Intermediate Legal Translation Course (1 June – 29 July 2009). What I liked the most about this course was the in-depth knowledge and experience of the teacher. The exercises were great. It was practical and was delivered by Pak Evand who could share his wealth of knowledge and experience. It was a very good course; every part of the course was useful – lots to cover, but the entire course was important and relevant. Pak Evand has a lot of experience; he is good at responding to questions and has excellent presentation skills. I would recommend these courses to anyone who wants to become a sworn translator.
Starting 22 August 2009 I attended the Grammar Course for Writers and Translators which was held on Saturdays. Pak Evand was very knowledgeable and passionate about the topic. He provided very clear and logical explanations throughout the course. This course was a success due to the quality of teaching. I am very impressed with the wealth of knowledge I have gained so far. I learned the skills which I could actually use. The overall course content, teacher and facilities were excellent and very professional.
Pak Evand, thank you ! It was a real confidence booster. I really appreciate it.

I started the 12-session Legal Translation Course on 25 March 2008 with another 10 students in the class and just completed the course yesterday, 6 May 2008. Definitely I found it a very useful course for those who want to learn a real good Legal English and become a real good Legal English Translator.
Evand Halim, undoubtedly, is a very professional teacher with his broad knowledge of Legal English, as well as very helpful, nice and patient with his students. His way of teaching is so excellent that we can easily absorb and understand all the materials / legal terms he taught in every session. All my classmates have the same opinion with me that we have a professional great teacher!
Although it was a short course (this is the only thing that I regretted!), I had learned a lot and enriched my knowledge of legal translation through this Legal Translation Course, and hopefully I will have the chance to continue with the Advance Class some time next year, if not this year.
Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my teacher, Evand, for an enjoyable and fruitful 6-week!

Dear Pak Evand,
Thank you so much for teaching us all aspects of legal translation. To be honest, I myself did not expect to be able to pass both basic and advanced courses as in the beginning it seemed to be extremely difficult. Owing to your easy style of teaching and your unquestioning skills, eventually I made it (though not to the maximum result from my side.
You are truly impressive teacher that I did not intend to miss even a single class of basic and advanced classes. We always enjoy spending our Saturdays with you.
Let me put it in one advertisement:
Come and attend the class of Evand : where fun and knowledge meet.
I do not have many comments on the class arrangement. Snack: sometimes good, but sometimes not, at least it should have come from a good bakery. The classroom is good enough.
Once again, thank you very much for all of the fine services and see you during UKP next year.

Evand Halim is one of a few teachers who has made a lasting impression on me. I took Basic Legal Translation Course and Advanced Legal Translation Course in 2008 at PPB Atma Jaya and from day one I have been spellbound by Evand’s extensive knowledge and expertise in legal translation as well as Evand’s way of transfering that knowledge to us, the participants, who were mostly non legal practitioners. Evand’s clear, in-depth explanation which covers language and legal aspects whenever Evand discusses a piece of translation work is what I find the most enriching. I don’t want to miss a thing in Evand’s class! Evand introduces us to the relevant theories, carefully guides us in the translation practice through discussion, and supplies us with lists of necessary vocabulary as well as familiarize ourselves with various kinds of dictionaries. Despite the seemingly heavy subject that Evand teaches, Evand can create a learning atmosphere that is both challenging and enjoyable. Furthermore, as an instructor, Evand is a role model to me as even to the silliest questions Evand’s response shows enormous patience.
Last but not least, I deeply admire Evand for having successfully equipped me within less than 70 hours with some essential principles to hold on to and an ample amount of knowledge so that I managed to confidently embark on my own journey across the dense jungle of legal translation. Evand has taught me something far beyond legal terminology since it is my whole understanding of Evand’s view on legal translation and on how the translation is done which resonates clearly every time I do my translation work. Just like an immensely experienced traveler, Evand tells me where and when to look and move rightward, leftward, forward and backward, reminds me to tiptoe on ground full of landmines, and warns me not to fall into a quicksand and not to get drowned like some ignorant travelers. Now teaching a legal translation course myself, I hope that I continue to be inspired by Evand’s passion for legal English and legal translation.
Thank you Pak Evand for opening my eyes and allowing me to behold and take pleasure in the mystery and intricacy of legal translation.
